Wetlands Caravan: The Evolving CEPA Action Plan for the Wise Use of Philippine Wetlands
In celebration of the World Wetlands Day, the Society for the Conservation of Philippine Wetlands, Inc. (SCPW), in cooperation with the Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau (PAWB), launched the Wetlands Caravan: The Evolving CEPA Action Plan for the Wise Use of Philippine Wetlands. The launching was held on 02 February 2006 at the Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Nature Center in Diliman, Quezon City.
The Wetlands Caravan aims to work with the communities in coming up with localized action plans in achieving the Ramsar Convention’s goal of “wise use of wetlands”. To kick off the Wetlands Caravan, four wetlands sites were identified that will pilot-test the preparation of local CEPA Action Plan using the approach introduced by the Wetlands Caravan: Laguna de Bay, Taal Lake, Candaba Swamps, and Tawi-Tawi coastal area.
Wetlands Caravan in Tawi-Tawi
Meanwhile, the Wetlands Caravan was simultaneously launched in the Island of Tawi-Tawi as part of their celebration of the World Wetlands Day on 02 February 2006. Several coastal communities in Tawi-Tawi joined in the celebration. The celebration was spearheaded by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. The SCPW, through its former President, Mr. Filemon Romero, was one of the organizers and sponsors of the event.
