The Society for the Conservation of Philippine Wetlands (SCPW) in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – National Capital Region (DENR – NCR) and with support from the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) celebrated World Wetlands Day 2022 on 22 February 2022 with an Exhibit titled “Wetland Actions for LPPWP”, a short program and a wetland walk.
The celebration was held at the Las Piñas – Parañaque Wetland Park (LPPWP). Because of the pandemic, the number of participants in this face-to-face event was limited to the number allowed by Covid 19 Inter-Agency Task Force. It was held in an open air venue at the Wetland Center Wave of the LPPWP.
The event was graced by Senator Cynthia A. Villar who delivered the Key Message. Ms. Amy M. Lecciones, the SCPW Vice-President and Executive Director, and Dr. Theresa Mundita Lim, the ACB Executive Director gave their opening messages. The guests and attendees were welcomed by DENR-NCR Regional Executive Director Jacqueline Caancan.
In her Opening Message at the event, Ms. Lecciones mentioned that since the Society’s inception 24 years ago, the SCPW has focused its work in promoting the conservation and wise use of wetlands through various communication, capacity-building, education, participation and awareness (CEPA) strategies and activities. These activities are centered on making people know the wonders of wetlands by experiencing them through SCPW’s youth ecological camps, wetlands bioblitz, wetland walks, even through children storytelling sessions, among others.
The event was attended by members of the LPPWP Protected Area Management Board, Local Government Officials of the Cities of Parañaque and La Piñas, DENR staff from Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau, Biodiversity Management Bureau and National Capital Region and SCPW Trustees and members.
