The 3rd Sustainability Leadership Journey (SLJ), organized by the Wildlands Conservation Trust (WILDTRUST) in partnership with the Global Nature Fund (GNF) and Living Lakes Network, was conducted from September 9 to 13, 2024, in St. Lucia, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It brought together international delegates and partners from the Living Lakes Network providing an essential platform for dialogue and collaboration among emerging middle-management leaders in the environmental and sustainability sectors.
SLJ participants took part in interactive workshops, insightful discussions, and immersive field experiences aimed at empowering the next generation of environmental leaders to drive meaningful change. The program included site visits to key conservation areas, such as the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, where participants discussed biodiversity, small-scale fisheries, and conservation partnerships. Attendees also participated in learning sessions focused on leadership and facilitation skills, and explored biomimicry and innovative solutions for lake and wetland management. Representing the SCPW in the SLJ were Ms. Darry Shel Estorba, Project Officer; and Xyrus Godfrey Capina, SCPW Member and Special Assistant/Volunteer for the Living Lakes Biodiversity and Climate Project (LLBCP).
Parallel to the SLJ activities, the project team meeting of the LLBCP took place with SCPW Executive Director, Ms. Amy M. Lecciones attending the sessions. Discussions were facilitated by Dr. Thomas Shaefer, head of Nature Conservation Unit and Living Lakes & Water Unit and Mr. David Marchetti, Programme Manager – both from Global Nature Fund. Among others, Ms. Lecciones reported on the progress of the Philippine component of the LLBCP, particularly the completion of the Green Filters at Pangil River Eco-Park and announced the meeting for the Southeast Asian Living Lakes Sub-Network in November 25-28, 2024 within the auspices of the 10th Asian Wetlands Symposium in Metro-Manila, Philippines.
The event also featured a boat cruise on the estuary, cultural tour, and concluded with discussions on future SLJ gatherings, including the next SLJ in Colombia in 2025. The lessons learned during the SLJ are instrumental in shaping future projects, enhancing the roles of participating individuals and organizations, like SCPW, in lake and wetland management, fostering stronger partnerships both locally and globally.
