The Society for the Conservation of Philippine Wetlands conducted a field test of the “Wetland Ecosystem Restoration Toolkit” in the Paligui Wetlands on June 10, 2022, with the participation of the youth and the Barangay Local Government Unit of Paligui, in the municipality of Candaba, Pampanga. In his welcome remarks, Barangay Chairperson Virgilio Manalili fully supported the event and enjoined the Youth to be active in protecting their environment particularly their wetlands and everything that thrives in them.
The restoration toolkit was discussed and those present were asked if the steps are easy to follow and could be easily implemented at the Barangay level. The suggestion to add a checklist, particularly in the identification of issues was positively considered and will be added to the toolkit.
The participants also visited the Paligui Wetland, a 135-hectares farmland adjacent to the previously declared bird sanctuary, where they practiced how to use the toolkit. The exercise led to issues identification and potential projects and activities which the youth can be part of in conserving, restoring, and eventually showcasing the wetland area.
The activity is part of “Active, Clean, and Bountiful Wetlands ” or “ACB Wetlands”, a project of the SCPW with funding support from the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB).
