The Project: Youth-in-Action for Lake Consevation

The Project aimed to empower and mobilize the youth to take actions that will arrest the deterioration of Laguna de Bay thus contributing significantly to the overall conservation efforts.  It covered three lakeshore municipalities (Angono, Binangonan, and Pateros) and two lakeshore cities (Muntinlupa and Taguig).

What we hoped to achieve –

  • increase awareness of the youth of the importance of the lake in their daily lives by taking actions in their schools and communities to conserve the lake.
  • manage domestic waste on a pilot scale and later replicate them to help reduce pollution in the lake.
  • expand partnerships for lake conservation among the concerned local government units, the academe, the non-government organizations, and the industry.

Implementation of Campers’ Community Projects

On the third day of the Youth Ecological Camp, the participants spent the whole morning on a visioning and planning workshop.  Pilot projects to be implemented by the campers in their respective communities were identified in this session.

 

“Munting Bata, Sasagip sa Lawa” of the Muntinlupa City Group – Each school group had its own IEC (information, education and communication) activities that was focused on proper waste management. School-based ecological seminars, contests and tree-planting were some of the activities included in the project.

 

“Lugawan sa Barangay para sa Lawa” of the Angono Group – The project involved an intensive information, education and public awareness campaign among the households in Barangays Poblacion Ibaba and San Vicente. In all community gatherings, Lugaw (porridge) which is a traditional and popular merienda item in the area was served to symbolize the community cooperation.

 

“Lonely River, Tayo ang Saver” of the Pateros Group – Activities included information dissemination, education and communication campaign activities in four participating schools and Sangguniang Kabataan. The group also institutionalized the “no-styropore policy” in their school campus.

 

“Target Basura. . . Bull’s Eye!” – Came up with information, education and communication campaign activities mainly about solid waste management. Each school group implemented activities which complement their ongoing environmental activities. The group from Talim Island put up a Materials Recovery Facility in the island, co-funded by the barangay and the Sangguniang Kabataan.

 

“Ating Solusyonan ang Polusyon sa Laguna de Bay” (Let us solve the problem of Laguna de Bay) of the Taguig Group – Increasing awareness among the schools about proper waste management was the aim of the project. School based seminars were the main activities of the project.
